Third Grade Curriculum

Every day the boys get off the bus, run up the drive way, kick off their shoes in the mud room, fly into the house and kiss me hello.

Then they get a snack and I ask them how their day at school was, and of course, what they learned. Most times I get a reply of, "nothing". Argghhhh.

But on Friday one of the twins was very excited to share with me that he did indeed learn something very valuable! My first thought was that he was now able to complete all of his multiplication facts during the timed test. Or maybe it was that the boy had finally got a handle on fractions. Or, maybe cursive writing was mastered...

Nope. I was very, very wrong. My son had learned how to turn his tongue on it's side.

What?

Yup!

You read that right. Apparently this has been something he has been working on for quite some time. All of his siblings are able to flip their tongues sideways and he works on this every day at school and of course on the bus (where the most important life skills are indeed learned).

He was so proud to show me this wonderful new skill. I am not able to do this...so I was truly impressed!

Now if you are thinking what is the big deal, then clearly you do not attend bonfire's regularly or are not in bars past closing time! Because, my friends, it is very important that you have "a trick" - something that you can do with a body part that will impress friends and strangers alike.

I have a wonderful friend I will refer to as "Fitty". She is able to put her entire fist in her mouth. See illustration:

She also is a big fan of tractors...

I am able to wiggle my ears. If you come to a bonfire or buy me a drink at the local pub, I will happily show you this nifty trick.

My kids now can all flip their tongues sideways.

Here is an illustration of the last child to master this trick.

If you are not squeamish and/or unimpressed with my illustrations then scroll down to see the photo of my very talented 9 year old.

  1. Damn...so now I gotta work on perfecting "a trick"? I assume this is different than the Lyell Ave "tricks"??!!! And here I thought I left peer pressure behind some 2-3 decades ago only to find it rears its ugly head to make me want to fit in again!!!
